wBiggleswade Chronicle 23 September 2005 - Time to set the Record Straight, Campaigners are distorting the truth says Council Chair. Leaflets claiming that thousands of new homes are set to be built in Arlesey have compelled the chairmen of the town council to put the record straight. Hugh Harper, Chairman of Arlesey Town Council has spoken out to reassure residents about future developments in the town, following a series of leaflets distributed over the last month by the Say No to No Say campaign. Councillor Harper believes that although campaigners are entitled to express their opinions, they are not giving people the full facts and their actions are resulting in scare mongering. He said: "People have written in to us saying they are concerned over all of these different developments going on. At present the only development next in front of Mid Beds is for the 73 houses." The development off St John's Road, was opposed by the Town Council, but gained outline planning permission from Mid Beds District Council. And the Town Council is still opposing the plan, on the grounds that an anticipated relief road would go right through a new housing estate, which it believes would be inappropriate. Another application to build 125 homes adjacent to the White Horse public house on land west of the High Street, was rejected by the District Council and the developer's appeal is set to be heard in December. Without the relief road, Councillor Harper believes the town's High Street will become choked. Councillor Harper said: "What we are doing at present is we are in consultation with developers, Mid Beds council and the County Council to see the best way forward to allow us to have more houses but to have the infrastructure there as well. We want to see the infrastructure and also the highways and roads put in place and relief roads built before future development is don. The relief road is our main concern. If we could get a relief road in place we would have no problems at all." He believes that the only way the town can get the amenities it craves is by further development, but in a controlled way. Anyone with concerns about developments in the town can contact the Town Council Clerk on 01462 733722.

Twenty years ago there were few out-of-town shopping centers, no hypermarkets, no mobile phones or phone towers, every went to their GP not a health centre and few people worked at home. Everything has changed since then but what changes can we expect over the next twenty years? And how can we make sure our communities survive them? This Autumn you get your chance to Plan This Place in workshops around the area which will help decide how Mid Bedfordshire could look in 2021. These are part of the Local Development Framework which replaces the Local Plan and is the blueprint for development for the next twenty years.
