This organisation was formed in 1992 and carries out practical conservation work in the Ivel Valley area of Bedfordshire, eg planting, hedge laying, habitat improvement and creation, and footpath access.  It is a partner in the Parish Paths Partnership.  The group works mainly on Sundays and some Saturdays.  They also meet on Wednesdays, with occasional talks and slides at a local pub.  There are organised walks and visits to the nature reserves at weekends.  Details are published in the Quarterly News.

See also Diary Dates for details of organised walks.

In May 2000 it was agreed to set up a sub group (The Arlesey Walks Group) to undertake the task of publishing a circular walks guide.  This was achieved on 12 June 2004.  Walks information boards can be found at the junction of Old Oak Close and Church Lane and at the entrance of the Village Hall in the High Street.  Packs detailing the walks are available free at the Town Council Office and the Resource Centre.  Latest information on activities being planned by ACORN can be viewed on line.

ARLESEY OLD MOAT NATURE RESERVE                                                       Contact:- Vic Williams

                                                                                                                                  01462 731767

The Old Moat Nature Reserve is a narrow strip of low lying land bordered by the railway to the east and the River Hiz to the west and is approximately 6 acres.  It is situated at the south end of the Glebe Meadows and is owned by the Wildlife Trust.  The main feature of the Reserve is the L shaped Moat, which contains a variety of water plants, including yellow iris, fool's water cress, marsh marigold and water figwort.  It also supports several dragonfly and damselfly species with frogs and toads spawning in the spring.  Grassland, scrub and secondary woodland provide food and shelter for birds, insects and small mammals.  Muntjac can frequently be seen crossing the various paths. Access to the Old Moat is via Glebe Meadows. Residents and visitors are very welcome to walk around the Reserve.

The Wildlife Trust holds twice monthly work parties on Sundays between 10.00am and 1.00pm and new volunteers are always welcome.  For dates of work parties, click here

For further information, contact Vic Williams, voluntary warden.

GLEBE MEADOWS

The Glebe Meadows are situated on the River Hiz and can be accessed by walking over the A507 bridge, crossing the railway and the river.  Walk back down the service road, to the Disabled Parking area for the Railway Station. The entrance to Glebe Meadows is clearly marked on your right.  There is a very pleasant riverside walk through the Meadows, with riverside picnic tables and seats so that you can enjoy the surroundings.  You will find an abundance of wildlife flowers, birds, butterflies, insects and other wildlife such as small lizards.  Keep an eye open on hot days for Kingfishers flying about the River Hiz.

Passing through the meadow, diagonally left, through the kissing gate, brings you into the Old Moat Nature Reserve.  The moat can be traced back to deeds dating 1820 and is shown next to Arleseybury Farm.  The Old Moat Nature Reserve was purchased in 1974 by the Wildlife Trust.
