Arlesey Conservation for Nature

Linda Clapham
Tel: 01462 834195

This organisation was formed in 1992 and carries out practical conservation work in the Ivel Valley area of Bedfordshire, eg planting, hedge laying, habitat improvement and creation, and footpath access. It is a partner in the Parish Paths Partnership. The group works mainly on Sundays and some Saturdays. They also meet on Wednesdays, with occasional talks and slides at a local pub. There are organised walks and visits to the nature reserves at weekends. Details are published in the Quarterly News.

In May 2000 it was agreed to set up a sub group (The Arlesey Walks Group) to undertake the task of publishing a circular walks guide. This was achieved on 12 June 2004. Walks information boards can be found at the junction of Old Oak Close and Church Lane and at the entrance of the Village Hall in the High Street.

Arlesey Old Moat Nature Reserve

Roger Watson
Tel: 01462 731963

The Old Moat Nature Reserve is a narrow strip of low lying land bordered by the railway to the east and the River Hiz to the west and is approximately 6 acres. It is situated at the south end of the Glebe Meadows and is owned by the Wildlife Trust. The main feature of the Reserve is the L shaped Moat, which contains a variety of water plants, including yellow iris, fool’s water cress, marsh marigold and water figwort. It also supports several dragonfly and damselfly species with frogs and toads spawning in the spring. Grassland, scrub and secondary woodland provide food and shelter for birds, insects and small mammals. Muntjac can frequently be seen crossing the various paths. Access to the Old Moat is via Glebe Meadows. Residents and visitors are very welcome to walk around the Reserve.

The Wildlife Trust holds twice monthly work parties on Sundays between 10.00am and 1.00pm and new volunteers are always welcome.

Pix Brook Nature Reserve

The Pix Brook Nature Reserve is situated on the Stotfold Road, just outside the 40mph sign as you leave Arlesey.

Walks around Arlesey

A number of walks have been put together by local people so that you can enjoy the varied local countryside around Arlesey. Walks information boards can be found at Pix Green (opposite the Old Oak pub); at the entrance of the Village Hall in the High Street; and at the entrance to West Drive.

Glebe Meadows

Karl Griffiths
Tel: 01462 731117

The Glebe Meadows are situated on the River Hiz and can be accessed by walking over the A507 bridge, crossing the railway and the river. Walk back down the service road, to the Disabled Parking area for the Railway Station. The entrance to Glebe Meadows is clearly marked on your right. There is a very pleasant riverside walk through the Meadows, with riverside picnic tables and seats so that you can enjoy the surroundings. You will find an abundance of wildlife flowers, birds, butterflies, insects and other wildlife such as small lizards. Keep an eye open on hot days for Kingfishers flying about the River Hiz.

They were purchased by Arlesey Conservation for Nature (ACORN) on 4 March 1999. The meadows are held in *perpetuity by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire as traditionally managed riverside meadows. The day to day management is undertaken by volunteers under the direction of the Glebe Meadows Management Group. The Management group consists of ACORN, Arlesey Town Council, The Ivel and Ouse Countryside Project and the Wildlife Trust. A management agreement between the Wildlife Trust and Arlesey Town Council ensures the continuity for future generations. There are currently two volunteer wardens.

Passing through the meadow, diagonally left, through the kissing gate, brings you into the Old Moat Nature Reserve. The moat can be traced back to deeds dating 1820 and is shown next to Arleseybury Farm. The Old Moat Nature Reserve was purchased in 1974 by the Wildlife Trust.
